With the 6th Annual Lone Star Throwdown in my backyard, I had to go check it out. This past weekend was my first time to this event, and I can see why it’s growing so quickly. I had a chance to talk with Todd “Radar” Hendrex to get the backstory on how this event got started 6 years ago. Todd told me about how he and his buddy, Lonnie Ford, were sitting around talking about the shows they grew up attending, and decided to try to replicate the same fun atmosphere and experience. “We would have been happy to get 600 cars,” Todd says. “Last year we had 2,500 cars and we couldn’t manage it. We decided to go to an all online registration and back down to 2,000 entrants to make it easier to manage.” The cut off of 2,000 show entrants was closed a couple of weeks ago.

The event attracts custom air-bagged, lowered, and lifted cars and trucks from every year, make, and model from all across the country. Some competitors have put up to $120K in customization into their vehicles. There were elaborate custom paint jobs next to retro Bettina jobs. There were lifted late model monster truck style trucks next to slammed to the ground-level lowriders and hotrods. For the spectators, a weekend pass was a reasonable $20. The Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Conroe was packed fence to fence. There was so much to see, it took the whole weekend to see everything. With lots of food and drink vendors, it was easy to stay the entire weekend.

American Force had an amazing demo inside the arena that was top notch. Any Level Lift out of New York was in the arena showing this demo of a lift kit that syncs the truck to a cell phone app that controls the hydraulics of the lift. “Pre-orders on this kit will run you around $14,500,” Aaron says. With patented  technology behind it, I’d say that’s a great deal.

The biggest attraction to the event is the car/truck show they host. Steve Green was in charge of judging the show competitors. You might recognize his name from the Houston AutoRama. Steve is Show Chairman of the AutoRama. He and his team of 8 judges, many of which also judge the AutoRama , efficiently looked over every show vehicle through the gate starting Thursday over the weekend to announce the winners of Top 100 and 23 Best Of categories by 3 pm on Sunday. “We started Thursday and we go from when the gates open, until we can’t see at night,” says Steve. “We look at the engine, the interior, the undercarriage, the paint, the suspension, the workmanship, the engineering. Of course, we don’t take off for the dust or the dirt, so it’s not about the cleanliness because it’s an outdoor event. There’s prize money and trophies awarded. These awards are incredible.”

So without further adieu, here are the show winners:
